We know all New Jersey homeowners have been dealing with a lot lately, but one thing we don’t think anyone should have to put up with is spending too much on staying comfortable during a warm spring or summer day or evening. While you’re hanging around your home, consider taking on a few simple tasks that will help improve your comfort without requiring you to break the bank!
Seal and insulate. The objective is to keep the cool, conditioned air in and the warm, humid air out! Inspect your home for air leaks and poor or completely missing insulation. If you can, use caulking and weatherstripping to seal leaks and replace or add insulation to accessible spaces in your attic, basement or crawlspace.
Keep vents clear. Impeding airflow is bad for your air conditioning system, but also for your comfort! Clear away rugs, curtains, furniture and dust from any vents to avoid throwing off the system’s pressure, dealing with uneven temperatures and allowing dust to circulate into the home.
Use shades & curtains. Blocking out the sun’s rays from warming up your home will allow you to stay cooler during the day and use your air conditioning system less. Look into useful window treatments for your sun-facing windows to really help stay cooler!
Use ceiling fans. Ceiling fans should be turning counterclockwise during the summer! And turn them off when no one’s in the room to avoid wasting additional energy.
Program your thermostat. When properly used, a thermostat can help you save up to 10% on your annual energy costs for both heating and cooling. Once you’ve set a schedule for your thermostat, don’t override it in order to really enjoy maximum comfort and savings!
