The Legend of the Haunted Heating System

- 10:04 am - October 24th, 2016

Creaking, shuddering, howling through the night, it’s … your furnace?

If this October has shown us anything so far, it’s that temperatures can be pleasantly high one day then unseasonably low that same night. Understandably, many New Jersey homeowners have found themselves turning their heating equipment on and off as a result. Whenever this happens Tomasso Bros. tends to get at least a few calls about peculiar sounds coming from down in the basement. Here are some of the most common noises your furnace might be making, and what they might mean:

screeching: might indicate a problem with the furnace’s motor.
rattling when your furnace starts up: could be a faulty motor bearing.
rattling when your furnace shuts off: possibly just the sound of your furnace cooling down, but could also be something more serious.
clanging: most likely a piping issue caused by the contraction that occurs when the furnace turns off.
loud boom or thud: could be a minor duct issue or a defective valve, which can cause a delayed ignition.
odd vibrating or whining: possibly something very serious; have it checked out immediately.
clunking or bumping: typically indicates a cracked belt.
creaks, shudders and howls: your basement is haunted – RUN! (Mwuhahahahaaa!)

We’re just kidding about that last one, but some of these heating system issues are really no joke. So, if you’ve been stirred from your sleep by one of these sounds, call 908-351-0313 or contact Tomasso Bros. online. We’ll evaluate your heating system, diagnose the problem and provide you with a quote if it looks like a major repair or replacement is needed.
