Your home heating system may not be able to communicate with you verbally, but it can let you know when something is wrong! Just pay close attention to the sights, smells, sounds and more of your furnace during the heating season so you don’t miss out on any potential issues.
Here are a few examples of ways your furnace tries to tell you what’s going on:
If your furnace isn’t delivering any heat, check your thermostat! Make sure it is set to ‘heat’ and not just on ‘fan’ mode. If your thermostat is set up properly, the issue could be a lack of airflow due to dirty, blocked filters or no flame to ignite the fuel.
Is your furnace constantly turning on and off? That’s called short cycling, and it’s another indication of an airflow and overheating problem. What’s more, short cycling can result in an increase in wear and tear on the equipment - leading to more frequent service calls.
What’s that sound? Oh, it’s just your furnace making some odd noises you’ve never heard before… time to call the pros! It could be a simple fix, like something needing tightening, or a bigger issue - such as a broken piece of equipment.
Some high-efficiency furnaces have a cool exhaust feature that utilize condensation pipes to direct water away from the equipment and outside the home. If that pipe becomes clogged or develops a leak, water could pool around the furnace.
